LOCAL TIPS
TIPPING
Standard US tipping applies: 18β20% at sit-down restaurants, $1β2 per drink at bars, and a few dollars for taxi or rideshare drivers. Most cafes have tip jars but it's discretionary.
SAFETY
West New York is generally safe for families, especially along the waterfront. Stick to well-lit areas after dark and keep an eye on children near cliff edges on the Palisades trails. Leave valuables out of sight in parked cars.
TRANSPORT
The NJ Transit Bus 156 and 158 run frequently along Bergenline Avenue and connect to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan. Street parking can be challenging β use the municipal lots near the waterfront. The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail is also a convenient option for reaching nearby Hoboken or Jersey City.
ETIQUETTE
West New York has a large Latin American community, particularly Cuban and Colombian. A little Spanish goes a long way and is warmly appreciated. Be respectful on shared trails and waterfront paths, keeping noise levels family-appropriate and yielding to other hikers.
WHAT TO PACK
Pack lightweight, breathable clothing for August humidity and bring a light rain jacket for afternoon summer showers
Bring sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes or trail sneakers for Palisades cliff paths, as terrain can be rocky and uneven
Carry reusable water bottles and sunscreen β waterfront areas and open trails offer little shade during midday sun
