LOCAL TIPS
TIPPING
Standard tipping culture applies: 18β20% at sit-down restaurants, $1β2 per drink at bars, $2β5 per night for hotel housekeeping. Rideshare apps prompt for tips automatically. All Smithsonian museums are free β no tipping expected there.
SAFETY
DC is very safe in tourist areas β the National Mall, Georgetown, Capitol Hill, and Dupont Circle are all well-patrolled and busy. Avoid walking alone late at night in areas east of the Capitol beyond Lincoln Park or in certain parts of Northeast/Southeast DC. Keep an eye on belongings in crowded metro stations.
TRANSPORT
The DC Metro is clean, reliable, and the best way to get around. Buy a SmarTrip card (reloadable) from any station β it saves money over single-ride tickets. Uber and Lyft are plentiful. Many top attractions are within easy walking distance of each other on and near the Mall. Avoid driving β parking is expensive and scarce.
ETIQUETTE
Stand to the right on Metro escalators so commuters can walk up the left side β locals take this seriously. When visiting memorials, speak quietly and be respectful; the Vietnam and Korean War Memorials in particular are deeply emotional spaces. Dress smart-casual for nicer restaurants; DC dining tends to be polished.
WHAT TO PACK
Pack light, breathable clothing in moisture-wicking fabrics β DC in June can feel humid, especially when walking miles on the National Mall.
Bring comfortable walking shoes you've already broken in; you'll easily log 8β12 miles per day on the Mall and in neighborhoods.
Carry a compact umbrella or packable rain jacket β afternoon thunderstorms are common in June and can appear with little warning.
