LOCAL TIPS
TIPPING
Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory in Italy. Rounding up the bill or leaving β¬1β2 per person at a sit-down restaurant is considered generous. Do not tip at bars when ordering standing at the counter.
SAFETY
Florence is generally very safe for tourists. Be vigilant of pickpockets around the Duomo, Santa Croce, and on crowded buses. Keep bags in front of you and avoid leaving valuables visible at outdoor cafΓ© tables.
TRANSPORT
The historic center (ZTL zone) is restricted to most private vehicles. Walk or use ATAF city buses for longer distances. Taxis are metered and reliable; use official white cabs or the itTaxi app. The train station Santa Maria Novella connects easily to day trips.
ETIQUETTE
Italians appreciate visitors who make an effort to greet in Italian β 'Buongiorno' in the morning and 'Buonasera' in the evening. Dress modestly when entering churches. Lingering over meals is normal and expected β do not rush or ask for the bill immediately after eating.
WHAT TO PACK
Pack lightweight, breathable linen or cotton clothing β July in Florence is hot and humid; avoid heavy fabrics.
Bring a light cardigan or shawl as churches require covered shoulders and knees for entry.
Comfortable walking shoes are essential β Florence's historic center is best explored on foot over uneven cobblestones.
